Skilled Trade Profile

Install, maintain, and repair the wiring, panels, and control systems that power homes, businesses, and industrial facilities — precision work that keeps the lights on and the code inspector happy.

Electricians install, maintain, and repair the wiring, panels, and control systems that deliver power, lighting, and communication throughout homes, businesses, and industrial plants. They read blueprints and code requirements to plan a layout, run conduit and cable, connect wiring to breakers and transformers, and test every circuit with meters before it's energized. Most work is on new construction or renovation crews; some specialize in maintaining live industrial or plant equipment.

  • Plan the layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures based on job specs and code requirements.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, panels, or other components using hand tools.
  • Inspect electrical systems and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for repair or adjustment.
  • Test circuits and continuity using ohmmeters, ammeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes.
  • Use conduit benders, pliers, knives, hacksaws, and wire strippers to install and repair wiring.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components using test equipment and hand tools to locate a breakdown.
  • Follow blueprints and technical diagrams to determine the location of wiring and equipment.
  • Direct and train apprentices and other workers to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring and equipment.
  • Advise on whether continued operation of equipment is safe given wear, code, or capacity concerns.
  • Maintain records of materials used, work performed, and inspection results.
