Pipefitters & plumbers assemble, install, alter, and repair pipelines or pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases. They lay out, assemble, install, or maintain pipe systems, pipe supports, or related hydraulic or pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, or industrial production or processing systems. Many tradesmen choose to specialize in either pipefitting or plumbing.

• ✓ Cut, thread, or hammer pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders, or pipe benders.
• ✓ Lay out full scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, or related equipment, according to blueprints.
• ✓ Assemble or secure pipes, tubes, fittings, or related equipment, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, or threading joints.
• ✓ Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair, according to specifications.
• ✓ Review blueprints, building codes, or specifications to determine work details or procedures.
• ✓ Measure and mark pipes for cutting or threading.
• ✓ Inspect, examine, or test installed systems or pipe lines, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.

Typical Entry Requirement — A high school diploma or GED is the standard minimum; no four-year degree is required.

Apprenticeship Path — Most pipefitters, plumbers, and steamfitters enter the trade through a 5-year apprenticeship sponsored by the United Association (UA) of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry, combining paid on-the-job training with in-class instruction.

Core Coursework — Blueprint reading, pipe system layout, welding and brazing, hydronics, and plumbing or mechanical code are emphasized throughout the apprenticeship.

Certifications — Many pipefitters and plumbers pursue welding certifications, backflow-prevention licensure, and OSHA safety credentials to qualify for higher-hazard or specialized work.
